Need for Orthopedic Specialty Certification Continuing Education

The BOC Orthopedic Specialty Certification for Athletic Trainers (ATs) launched fall of 2021.Those who have earned the BCS-O must demonstrate continuing competence by complying with the Continuing Specialty Certification requirements, in addition to those required for the ATC® credential.

BOC Approved Providers are already eligible to offer orthopedic specialty CE to meet this expanded need. To develop content for orthopedic specialty offerings, BOC Approved Providers should review the domains and tasks outlined in the free Content Outline of the BOC Orthopedic Practice Analysis (OPA). The OPA defines the domains (medical knowledge, procedural knowledge, professional practice) and task statements that are assessed on the Orthopedic Specialty Certification Exam. The full OPA includes the knowledge and skill statements within each task statement.

The BOC will be implementing changes to the Program Directory in summer 2022 to provide a way for BOC Approved Providers to promote specific activities that BCS-O credential holders can take to meet their continuing education (CE) requirements. Highlights will include the ability to indicate which CE activities align with the OPA, by selecting which domain(s) and task statement(s) the activity falls within.
