The BOC regularly features BOC Approved Providers for notable efforts to enhance its continuing education programs for Athletic Trainers (ATs). Featured organizations follow the guidelines set forth by the BOC. Andrews Research & Education Foundation Education Manager Leandra Price, MS, ATC, LAT shares her organization’s experience.

Why does your organization choose to participate in the BOC Approved Provider Program?

Athletic Trainers (ATs) play a vital role within the health care setting and we value their experience as a part of the Andrews Research & Education Foundation’s family. We provide ATs in various employment settings including high school, collegiate, physical therapy departments, medical clinics, military and industrial settings. It is incredibly unique that all our health care providers can communicate and collaborate easily to provide the best possible care for patients. Andrews Research & Education Foundation participates as a BOC Approved Provider to continue collaboration in a classroom setting allowing ATs to stay at the forefront of evidence-based research and education. We really encourage each athletic training team member to attend all educational opportunities we provide along with other health care professionals.

You have offered Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Category continuing education units (CEUs) for a few years now. What impact has this made on your educational programs?

Offering EBP Category CEUs has made a substantial impact on our program by bringing in more program faculty who take their evidence based research and apply it to the clinicians. We understand the importance of research at Andrews Research & Education Foundation together with education. Being able to provide both aspects to the ATs where they can apply that knowledge clinically helps provide better care to their patients, and that is a satisfying accomplishment.

How have the BOC standards and guidelines for BOC Approved Providers impacted your program development and administrative processes to offer continuing education programs for Athletic Trainers?

The BOC standards and guidelines keep our conferences and programs at a high standard level to ensure we provide cutting edge knowledge to ATs. Regarding administrative processes, it helps provide clear instructions on what is needed to maintain requirements to be a BOC Approved Provider. Additionally, it serves to shape our BOC provider handbook, ensuring materials are current as we plan or develop future programs.

How do you design your curriculum to help participants improve outcomes for the patients they serve?

Most of the curriculum we design at Andrews Research & Education Foundation looks at the health care system as a whole. Usually, the patient interacts with various health care professionals throughout an injury or illness. As such, ATs and other health care professionals must continue to educate themselves on all topics, not just prevention or rehabilitation. For example, within one of our biggest programs, the Injuries in Football Conference, we continue to design and improve the curriculum to show all facets of care throughout that patient’s injury. Curriculum for this program is designed to have the various health care providers in one setting to cover the continuum of care for that patient from time of injury to return to play. The goal is to allow collaboration on education to improve the patient’s outcomes.

What advice do you have for organizations looking to be on the cutting edge and maintain compliance, as they develop education programs?

The best advice I can give other organizations looking to be on the cutting edge and maintain compliance is to remain curious, study the trends, and continue to be a student of the emerging in practices in sports medicine. I feel it is especially important to take time to be a participant of other organizations’ programs as well as view your own from a participant lens. I think if you really want to excel as a BOC Approved Provider, it is important to collaborate with other organizations. That way you can continue to be at the forefront of providing the best tools for ATs to help their patients be the best that they can be.
