Compliance and Regulatory Education: Best Practices for Athletic Training

The BOC hosted the CARE Conference 2019, on July 12-13, 2019, in Omaha, Nebraska. Formerly known as the BOC Athletic Trainer Regulatory Conference, the CARE Conference offered regulatory best practices for the athletic training industry. Attendees included approximately 100 representatives of the athletic training and regulatory industries.

The conference began with subject matter experts discussing various activities currently taking place in relation to regulatory affairs. Updates were provided by leading athletic training organizations, including National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Governmental Affairs Committee, Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, the BOC, the Federation of Association of Regulatory Boards (FARB) and Atkinson and Atkinson, LLC.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) presented on promoting competition in regulated occupations focusing on occupational licensure, the Economic Liberty Task Force and license portability. In addition, the conference featured operational “war stories” regarding online licensure, board/staff conduct and human resources, as well as advice for surviving a regulatory review. There were also presentations on model language guidelines, stakeholder engagement and top regulatory cases. Round table discussions and lightning talks featured a variety of topics and provided the attendees the opportunity to discuss topics in a smaller group.

During the conference, the 2019 BOC Public Advocacy Award winners were announced. The award was designed to recognize an individual, group or organization who has demonstrated leadership in protecting athletic training consumers. This year’s honorees were the Korey Stringer Institute and Jenni Wheeler-Johnson, the president of the West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association. A reception followed the conference to honor the recipients.

The biennial conference is designed to assist regulators and state leaders in developing strategic initiatives and resolutions to protect both the public and credential holder. This year’s conference was sponsored by Scantron and Regal Awards.

Save the date for CARE Conference 2021, coming July 16-17, 2021 in Omaha at the Marriott Downtown in the Capitol District.
